Breaking the Plaster Ceiling

A short presentation & discussion with a local general contractor about employment and empowerment in the trades.

From the organizer:

"Employment and small businesses in construction often have very little diversity, yet represent jobs that are non-exportable, with better pay than restaurant and hotel service jobs. Why is this and what can we do about this? Women and LGBTQ people in particular are vastly under-represented in the building trades. As a queer trans woman with a disability, i have a unique Pov.
Lack of knowledge as to how our machines and buildings around us work can lead to exploitation and disparagies- one study found that women are charged more at auto repair shops- especially those that knew little about how cars work. Lets explore how skill-sharing, community college, non-profit volunteering and just showing up can lead to empowerment and employment in the building trades!"
