Dye Workshop

Creating Personal Fabric

In this class we approach the dyeing process with the spirit of experimentation and creative license while learning technical aspects that make plant based (cotton, rayon, linen, bamboo, hemp...) fabric vibrant and colorfast. We will cover fundamentals for dye application to produce one of a kind, technically sound and color-fast hand-dyed fabric. You will learn techniques for dyeing graduated colors; for dyeing fabrics that complement, contrast and coordinate with each other; for fabrics that work well in single projects or stand as unique fabric for one of a kind projects.

I don't teach recipes in my dye classes. I teach Seeing the colors within the color. What does it take to change emerald green to olive green? How do you move from purple to raspberry? How is one red different from another...and how do you achieve the one you want? I think of it as learning to dye by eye. Similar to learning to play music by ear. If you know how to see what element are in a color, then you can create them without recipes. This is a dye class for fiber artists who approach (or would like to approach) dyeing with confidence in using color intentionally and effectively.

There is a $20 fee for workshop, handouts and dyes used in class. This workshop is limited to 12 participants. Please contact Firestorm to reserve your space soon. The $20 workshop fee is required with reservation. No refunds given unless your space is filled.

What to Bring

  • Several yards of plant based fabric to dye (cotton, rayon, linen, bamboo, hemp...). If fabric is new, please pre-wash, rinse well and do not use softener sheets in the drying process. Softener sheets may have chemicals that cause fabric to resist dye.
  • Three one quart containers (old yogurt or deli containers work well), with lid if possible. If recycled containers are not available, disposable 1 quart containers can be purchased new from grocery store. Note: any tools or containers used in dye process cannot be used in food prep again.
  • Rubber gloves
  • Paper Dust Mask

Optional

  • If student would like instructor to provide fabric for dye workshop, please contact her: kathrinweber2009@gmail. Make sure the email has Firestorm Dye Workshop in subject line.
  • Dye kits and dye books for future dyeing activity may also be purchased at the workshop.
  • For more info on class or materials, contact instructor Kathrin Weber at kathrinweber2009@gmail.com.
