No BID Letter Writing with AFBU

Join organizers from Asheville Food & Beverage United for a letter writing session opposing the creation of a Downtown Business Improvement District. Drop in and let City Council know that a "no" vote is a critical defense of our city's democratic future and the survival of the working people who live here.

A Business Improvement District is a state-legislated municipal district that raises property taxes to fund projects and services above and beyond what the city provides. The district is proposed to take up most of downtown and will be run by an appointed, unelected board—with half the chairs reserved for individuals owning $1.5 million or more in property. BIDs employ their own security, whose concern is maintaining profitability rather than public safety or the well-being of the entire community.

Asheville Food and Beverage United is the Local 828 of Restaurant Workers United, a worker-led union dedicated to advocacy and organizing for service industry workers in the Asheville area. Learn more at avlfbu.com.
