Calls From Home

Community Bail Fund Benefit

Join the Asheville Community Bail Fund in collaboration with the Building Communities Not Prisons coalition and Working Films for a special screening of the film Calls From Home.

This event is an opportunity for community members to learn about and write public comment challenging the proposed construction of a half-billion dollar, 1,400-bed federal prison in Letcher County, KY while also raising funds to support our local bail fund's continued work to get folks out of Buncombe County Detention Center. Organizers are requesting a sliding scale donation of $15-$30, with no one turned away for lack of funds.

Letcher County is less than 200 miles from Asheville, and The Bureau of Prisons’ frequently incarcerates people 500 miles from home, or more, separating families and making it extremely difficult for loved ones to stay connected. Join us to say No New Letcher Prison!

Produced by WMMT in Whitesburg, Kentucky, Calls from Home is a weekly radio show that broadcasts messages from friends and family of those incarcerated in the prison system of Central Appalachia. WMMT is the community radio service of Appalshop, a not-for-profit multimedia arts center founded in 1969 as an economic development project of the War on Poverty. Calls from Home records calls every Monday night from 7-9pm, and then broadcasts the messages from 9-10pm. WMMT’s local radio signal reaches eight prisons and many regional jails and detention centers. Seven of the eight penitentiaries were built in the last 20 years, and they house prisoners whose families live hundreds and in some cases thousands of miles away.

The Asheville Community Bail Fund is community-powered and informed by diverse visions for restorative and transformative justice, toward a world without prisons and police. Learn more at avlcommunitybail.carrd.co
